Embarrassing Moments
I just thought I would share a silly story:
My husband and I are currently without a church home, and are visiting different churches and praying for God's direction. We met a pastor a couple of weeks ago who we liked, and got to know a little bit. We liked him well enough that we decided to visit his church even though we suspected it might not be our sort of church.
This morning I got up and got decked out in one of my favorite outfits. The shirt is blue and is covered in gold glitter, and I like to wear it with brown capris. I put on my sparkly gold jewelry to match, and of course did my hair and makeup. Derek wore a polo shirt and khaki shorts and flip-flops.
Maybe you know where this is going.........
We were running a little late, and were slowed by a train. We we arrived we plowed inside. As I peered into the sanctuary, I noticed several things at once, as I made my way to the back pew. Everyone was dressed nice, and every woman in the church was wearing a dress and everyone had their hair up. Bare earlobes and there wasn't a spark of jewelry in the place. The men were all wearing suits and ties.
I felt my cheeks blushing and I turned my eyes to the floor. I would have loved to turn around and escape, but it was too late, the pastor knew we were there. Leaving now was not an option. I was tempted to remove my jewelry and throw my hair up, but it was no use. The gold sparkles on my shirt and my dark makeup would give me up anyway.
Talk about embarrassing moments.
There has to be a great lesson in all of this. I suppose I'll tell you when I figure it out!

The great lesson is: should it matter if you're wearing the same stuff they were??? Except that you felt out of place, it has nothing to do with your salvation... does it? If it doesn't and they made a point of mentioning it, then I'd have to ask "where was the love of God?" there... What a surprising experience. I'd say there are few congregations so uniform as to not wear a speck of jewelry in the whole place!!! My church is very conservative and yes we do mostly wear dresses, but some wear jewelry and some don't. But it doesn't affect our salvation, so we don't worry about it... I pray that you will find a church home where you can learn of God and be blessed and be a blessing! Happy Sunday!
It was fun wasn't it? I think that the lesson, if any that God might want us to learn from this experience is how much we still seek mans approval. I know that God wants us to only seek his approval and not care about judgemental glances from others. Its kind of like that Todd Agnew song "My Jesus" You know what I mean?
@derekwilson24 - Wow! Yeah, I do.
LOL - I think I would have wanted to escape too....... Did you stay and chat after the service?
@Neeka1 - Well, it was one of those churches where the pastor goes to the back after the service and greets everyone on the way out, but we just stayed long enough to shake a couple hands and use the restroom.
Ya, I was still too intimidated to stay.
I dont think it should matter what you wear to church. I mean we should be respectable and all but we shouldn't have to be always to the people's expectation and if they all are judging you on what you wear and that all that matters where IS Gods LOVE?
We just didnt realize that it was that kind of church. We have gotten used to going to laid back, relaxed, Vineyard's and stuff. I will probably dress differently the next time a visit a new church for the first time.
Hello Mrs. Song,
You made your site simple yet elegant but I see that you don’t write here much anymore!
I want to help people to really get to know Jehovah God and His plans, especially in these troubled times: 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. (John 9:31) (NIV)
Watch this movie trailer of "The Cross" The Arthur Blessitt Story starting in theaters today 3-27-2009. Tell all of your family, friends, Saved and Unsaved about it. It will challenge the most devout Christian and convict the most sinful of sinners. This is a movie for everyone.
